Last month, Amalgamated Pest Control received a phone call from an extremely concerned and upset customer from a unit complex in Western Sydney.
Our customer was fairly sure that her unit had become infested by Bedbugs.
Every morning she was waking up itchy with welts on her body. It took her a few days to realise that this could be a pest problem.
Some bedbug facts
Bedbugs are a very cryptic pest. They spend the majority of their lives hiding in cracks or cervices around the area where their food source – warm blooded mammals as they sleep.
They only really venture out when the host is immobile and sleeping.
A lot of the time, the unlucky occupant of a bedbug infested room won’t see the bedbugs until an infestation becomes quite serious. This habit is one strength to this pest’s survival but ironically a great weakness that we, as pest managers exploit during the control process.
Help from Amalgamated Pest Control with bedbugs
Our technician visited our customers unit that afternoon in Merrylands.
The bedbug infestation was quickly identified. Our customer was baffled as to how her unit had become infested with bedbugs.
After a brief chat she told our technician that she’d recently been overseas visiting family. It’s highly likely that she brought a few hitchhikers back through customs with her in her suitcase.
The main way bedbugs find their way into your home is through your luggage after a trip overseas or stay in a hotel or hostel.
We’ve even treat bedbugs on buses, planes, cinemas and restaurants. Anywhere where people are immobile for a period of time can be susceptible to bed bug infestation.
How do you know if you have Bedbugs?
If you suspect you have a bedbug problem, you can start by looking at your bed framing, mattress, bed and pillow covers, walls and skirting behind your bed, your bedhead and bedside drawers.
In a home, these are the places most likely for the origins of an infestation. When looking at these items, you need to look for evidence of spots of blood.
The pictures below are from the property in Merrylands showing the blood spotting you need to look for.
Another place to look for cracks and crevices around you bedroom in the immediate vicinity of your bed or actually in and around your bed.
If you do this with a bright torch, you will see bedbugs hiding in these cracks, waiting for you to go to sleep.
The piping on a mattress is a favoured place for bedbugs to hide.
How Amalgamated Pest Control treat Bedbugs?
There’s no ‘quick fix’ in relation to proper bedbug control.
They are resistant to a lot of pesticides, they have a rapid breeding cycle and they hide really well.
The best thing you can do is contact a professional pest manager. It might not be the cheapest option straight up but in the long term, it will be.
Bedbug control relies on one thing – an extremely thorough inspection.
Amalgamated Pest Control will undertake a few different processes when controlling bedbugs, both non-chemical and chemical.
The reason why an inspection is crucial is because you need to
- identify every hiding place in the home that they are using
- identify where all the live bugs are and where all of their eggs are placed.
Failure to remove all eggs and all bugs will mean the treatment will not be successful.
A single pregnant female bedbug can re-populate to thousands within months.
This photo below shows one of our bedbug specialists using a non-chemical method of control.
This method of control uses a specialised vacuum tool designed to vacuum the live bedbugs and eggs. This is not an ordinary home vacuum, it’s designed so that once the bugs are inside the vaccumm, they cannot get out.
Once we have removed as many eggs and live bedbugs a possible, then we apply products directly into cracks and crevices to control and bugs that may remain.
To the customers delight, our technician then revisited the site a couple more times over a couple of weeks, to make sure there all bedbug activity had been controlled.
Our customer couldn’t be happier with the treatment and has enjoyed bite free night ever since.
Concerned about bedbugs or other pests?
If you believe you have a bedbug problem, don’t wait!
The longer it takes you to contact a professional, the longer you’ll be living with these bugs and the more costly it will become in the future.
